Rules Updates
Update: Waiver of Liability Form (June 16, 2010) - DOC PDF
As the world becomes more litigious, our sponsors have requested that we have a more detailed Waiver of Liability form for participants in this summer's Hunt-Winston School Solar Car Challenge. This document is provided so that you have adequate time to review the content and secure parent signatures.
Update: 2010 Race Information, Procedures, and Protocols (May 31, 2010)
As we approach this summer's Hunt-Winston School Solar Car Challenge, this update is provided regarding Race Information, Procedures, and Protocols. These are certainly not all of the race procedures, but are important in your preliminary planning.
Update: Annual Rules Update (January 19, 2010)
The rules have been revised for 2010. In summary, the changes include:
  • Section 5.6 (Seating Position) - The rule requiring the angle of driver seat to be 27° is deleted.
  • Throughout - Formalize changes in event name.
  • Other minor housekeeping modifications.
Note: Driver's License Required (May 14, 2008)
A reminder that driver's licenses are required for all drivers of solar cars.
Update: Typo Cleanup (October 22, 2007)
Reference to Section 5.19 corrected to Section 5.18. Section 5.18 allows the solar array to be charged physically away from the vehicle, while still electrically connected.
Update: Annual Rules Update (October 6, 2007)
The rules have been revised for 2008. In summary, the changes include:
Update: Driver Compartment (June 11, 2005)
The solar driver compartments must have all rough edges and pointed objects padded. Anything that could come in contact with the driver during a collision should be padded.
Update: Registration Deadline (May 27, 2005)
The deadline for team registration and in inclusion in the Official Race Publication is May 31st. Teams not meeting this deadline will be considered for the next racing year.
Update: Race Events (April 9, 2005)
This provision has been updated to require participation in all pre-race and post-race events and activities, and specifies a penalty for not complying with this rule.
Clarification: Safety Belt Harness (June 15, 2004)
Question: How do you determine the grade of a bolt?
Clarification: Driver's License (January 28, 2004)
Question: What does the race consider as a valid driver's license?
Clarification: Crush Zones (February 27, 2003)
Question: We were wondering if the 15 cm of crush zone was something that had to be added to the frame of the car? Or if it is ok to use the frame, as long as the driver sits 15 cm away from the edge of the frame, and the frame provides needed protection.
Clarification: Crush Zones (October 27, 2002)
Question: I need references for the determination of safe zone construction for side, frontal, rear, and roll-over. The side impact zone, while least likely, is the one that worries me the most.
